Sensitive? Nah, I can be as tasteless and thoughtless as the best of my gender!

You are contradicting yourself, suh. (And I am typing with a southern accent for no reason.) Society is afraid of a word, so they replace it with a word that doesn't actually fit.

...that may have been a little 'Gone with the Wind' throwback...People miss the civility of language from that time period.
Words do have meaning. There is a little fear in the way we convey thought nowadays.

I agree. That reminds me. I saw an episode of "Sharpe" a couple of years back with some British friends. The scene had an American officer fighting with the British during the Napoleanic wars (think 1812 era). He was called "an American" and he took offense and corrected,
"I, suh, am a 'Virginian'!"
It really illustrates the attitudes of many prior to the American Civil War.

Interesting. We Americans have all sorts of national pride, don't we?
Napoleonic wars, eh? Ah, Hornblower, how I miss thee.

Ol' Horatio is a favorite of mine as well! By the way, there is a picture of a guy who dressed up as Horatio Hornblower in the Wonder Con 2008 pictures!
